00100 Proposal for the Stanford Computer Music Project
00200
00300 John M. Chowning
00400
00500
00600 The Department of Music, ten years ago, began its support of computer
00700 music at a time when many university music departments considered
00800 such work to be anti-humanistic and/or trivial. We developed (and
00900 were the first) a self-contained system for direct digital synthesis
01000 using computers supported by powerful synthesis and composition
01100 programs. The fact that we have been supplying in recent years a
01200 growing number of universities with our programs and special
01300 knowledge is a powerful testament to the initial foresight of the
01400 Stanford Music Department.
01500
01600 The activity at the Stanford Computer Music Project (SCMP) is
01700 vigorous and productive. The current research areas and the
01800 personnel are
01900
02000 1. Music Editing - L. Smith
02100 2. Frequency Modulation Synthesis - J. Chowning
02200 3. Reverberation and Spatial Cues - L. Rush
02300 4. Spectral Analysis and Perception - J. Grey, J.A. Moorer
02400 5. System Hardware and Programming - J.A. Moorer
02500
02600 Loren Rush is a composer who has a long-standing involvement
02700 with SCMP, predating his doctorate at Stanford. His critical hearing
02800 and careful research are of obvious benefit.
02900
03000 John Grey is a doctoral candidate in Psychology whose
03100 disertation promises to be major contribution in psychoacoustics.
03200
03300 J.A. Moorer is a doctoral candidate in Computer Science whose
03400 scientific training and deep interest in music and acoustics havg
03500 been of enormous help to us.
03600
03700 Together, this is a group of people having exceptional skills and
03800 dedication would constitute an ideal staff for SCMP.
03900
04000
04100 Funding The Music Department cannot by itself support
04200 SCMP. In view of the nature of our work, therefore, NSF or NIMH seem
04300 to be attractive possibilities for support. We are now putting
04400 together a large proposal for support over a two year period for the
04500 above personnel and for a computer and/or special purpose processor.
04600 With the help of the department we should also contact the large
04700 foundations.
04800
04900
05000 Teaching Within the competence of SCMP as proposed is
05100 a number of courses and seminars, some of which could be offered in
05200 the general music curriculum and others as seminars for more
05300 specialized interest in electronic music and acoustics.
05400 General Courses-
05500 Acoustics - Grey, Chowning
05600 Psychoacoustics - Grey
05700 Specialized Seminars-
05800 Music Compiler and Instrument Design - Rush,Chowning
05900 Use of Score - Smith
06000 Additive Synthesis - Grey
06100 FM Synthesis - Rush, Chowning
06200 Mathematics - Moorer
06300 Digital Processing - Moorer
06400 Reverberation and Spatial Programs - Rush
06500
06600
06700 Organization For the purposes of research, teaching,
06800 and fund-raising SCMP should have some degree of formal organization.
06900 I propose the following:
07000
07100 Principle Investigator - Smith
07200 and Faculty Advisor
07300
07400 Co-directors - Chowning, Rush
07500
07600 Research Associates - Grey, Moorer
07700
07800 I understand from L. Smith that he does not have the time to assume
07900 primary responsibility for writing proposals and teaching the
08000 computer courses. In view of the fact that I will be away after
08100 March, the co-directorship has the advantage of providing Rush an
08200 official position from which he can 'push' proposals and over-see the
08300 general activities of the project. He should also teach the computer
08400 synthesis courses while I am away. It seems to me important that the
08500 momentum of that program be maintained.5
08600
08700 Assuming that we are able to find support all of the positions except
08800 for L. Smith would be research associates where the department would
08900 be responsable for 1/2 of one position (Rush until my return).
09000
09100
09200 Association with IRCAM I would propose to Boulez
09300 while I am in Europe that a time-sharing arrangement be worked out
09400 with his Institute de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique Musicale
09500 (IRCAM), where some faculty and staff of SCMP exchange locations with
09600 some staff of IRCAM. From the point of view of Boulez it should be
09700 attractive since he will have initial need of this kind of
09800 'ventilation'. From Stanford's position it would allow a member of
09900 the project to work at IRCAM for a limited period in a siggnificantly
10000 different environment. I would suggest that such exchanges include
10100 Stanford graduate students as well.
